She had never been a big person; some would even call her build slight. With curly jet black afro hair, her almond colored eyes complimented her light skinned; eyes that seemed to bore into your soul whenever she set them on you. She had a way of commanding attention wherever she was.
You couldn’t exactly call her a tall person but she wasn’t short either. With a calm throaty voice a lot of men would describe as sexy, one could conclude that she was a gorgeous woman. Basically, she looked very tough and domineering yet captivating on first glance but getting to know her gave one an insight on the kind of person she truly was, very emotional and vulnerable, she was easy to love.
Many women around her considered her a threat because she always seemed to attract everyone in the room. It wasn’t that she was seductive, she was simply desirable. Just twenty three years of age, she possessed a wealth of wisdom in her grasp, a depth of perception unmatched in her age grade. Her one shortcoming was that she loved too much. Someone had once described her as everything woman and I need not say more.
Getting to know her was one of the best things to happen to him and now that he had finally admitted to himself that he liked her, he braced himself to profess his love. Several times in the past few weeks, he had tried in futility to get the words out but he always chickened out for fear of rejection. He in fact wondered how she was still single despite her awesome personality and eventually concluded that it was due to guys in the past not being able to look past her seemingly unruffled front while some others were just intimidated by the confidence she always exuded.
Finally mustering enough courage, he expressed his feelings and watched her face glow up with every word that passed.
“You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for you to say that.”
Before he could express his surprise in words, she shut him up with a kiss, burying her face in the nook of his neck afterwards. He inhaled deeply, the proximity of their bodies leaving him breathless and the memory of their first shared kiss leaving blushes on his cheeks. He knew she wasn’t unaffected because he felt the sharp intake of her own breath as well as he would his own heart.
“I have loved you since the moment I met you.”
Those words were all the confirmation he needed. Holding out his right hand, he whispered: “If I was your boyfriend, I’d walk down the street like this with you, proud to show you off to the whole world.”
“And if I was your girlfriend, I’d put my arm in the crook of your elbow like this and let you.” she whispered back and took his arm.
And so they walked.
Sixty three years and fifty nine years of marriage later, they still walked together that way, till she died peacefully in her sleep at the ripe old age of eighty six. Her husband joined her a few months after.
