I closed my diary and rolled on the bed to stare at the ceiling. Then, I reached out to put off the bedside lamp and simply stayed there on my bed thinking. I had just written about my fight with Eniola, my best friend. Why did boys have to be such a problem? I turned restlessly on my bed. My eyes went to the clock just above the room door which was the only thing disturbing the silence of the night. It was 01:00 in the morning. I yawned and stretched more comfortably on the bed. The ticking of the clock became music to my ears and my eyes drifted shut. When I opened my eyes again, it was 06:30 but I felt like I had only just closed my eyes. Being the usual me, Sharon Badejo- good daughter, student and sister-move friend from that list, I forced myself off the bed and prepared for school, dreading it. School meant I had to face Eniola, Anderson and all my other friends who now thought badly of me.
Luckily, my mum helped Tobi, my younger brother get ready for school, so we were ready by the time the bus came.
I walked through the hall to my locker, avoiding all the accusing stares directed at me by my used-to-be friends. I just took my books and left for my first class. I had stopped by the restroom so I got to my Chemistry class a bit late. Everyone turned to look at me as I entered the lab. I felt like disappearing, so I kept my head down as I walked to a seat by the window.
‘Sharon!’ Miss Shola looked at me through her glasses. I squirmed in my seat as I felt convinced that she could somehow see through my clothes. I felt like disappearing for the second time that day. I swallowed hard and answered after what seemed like ages.
‘Ma’
‘See me after this class.’ I felt relieved only momentarily. After all, I had nothing else to do. No friend to talk to- nothing. Then, a million reasons why she would want to see me rushed through my head, but I shrugged it off. It was better to wait. I looked up to find Anderson smiling at me. I kept my gaze fixed on Miss Shola to avoid looking at him.
The class went fairly well and I waited to see Miss Shola. She simply gave me a letter for my parents and told me I had been chosen to sit the test for a scholarship to Hebron University but they needed to sign their consent. I nodded and stumbled out giddy with joy and at the same time wishing for school to end.
I was free till break time as I always was on Mondays so I slipped to the toilet with a novel in hand to while away the time but I couldn’t read. My mind drifted back to Eniola and Anderson.
It had all started three weeks ago on Social Day…
